Outsider Values and the Wrong Priorities

ANCHORAGE: Alaska candidate for US Congress, Matt Moore issued this statement regarding the closure of the Flint Hills Refinery in North Pole, AK.

"It is puzzling that the Koch Brothers have $400 million to spend on political attack ads but dont want to employ 80 Alaskans to produce energy," said Moore.

Moore further stated that Flint Hills knew the contamination existed when they purchased the refinery and since then, the industrial solvent contamination has been discovered far beyond the plant property. Flint Hills is breaking a five-year commitment with the Alaska Department of Natural Resources that was signed less than a year ago.

"Alaska needs value added manufacturing, and diverse industry in our state," said Moore. "We need a congressman that can work on solutions with energy and enthusiasm instead of a representative that plays the blame game."

Don Young and Non Essential Federal Workers

Heres a reminder to all that we need to think before we speak. October 17, 2013, (on the very day Congress voted to return the furloughed federal employees to work) KTVA spotlighted a clip of Don Young stating:

Why do we have the number of people working for the federal government who are not essential, that were furloughed. If they werent essential, they arent needed. I somehow think we ought to look at.

Like many Alaskans, I have difficulty following his reasoning. It seems Don doesnt recognize that essential personnel are those who provide for national security, benefit payments, contractual obligations, and perform duties that protect life and property.

Alaskas job sector is basically divided into three nearly equal segments, with the federal government supporting 35% of our work force. About 11,000 Alaskans work for civilian federal agencies and another 53,000

Alaskans indirectly depend on civilian activities for their jobs.[1] While we may not have fallen off the fiscal cliff after three weeks without our federal workers, clearly the government cannot run on a skeleton crew for an extended time without massive problems developing.

Youngs overly simplistic reasoning is a threat to our national security, global economic stability, continued US economic recovery, is very short sighted and fails to stand up for Alaskan workers. Worse yet, for Don Young to callously write-off over one-third of our workforce and the families that depend on that income, clearly illustrates he is NOT the Congressman for All Alaskans.

Were this not pitifully obvious enough, it is clear that Don Young somehow thinks he is deserving of his own paycheck whereas other federal workers are not. During the furlough, of our three Congress members, Don was the only one who failed to do the right thing. One donated his pay to charity. Another deferred payment of her salary. But Don demanded to continue receiving his salary - on time. Obviously, he believes he is more essential than one-third of Alaskan workers.

Lets look at what essential really is. The shutdown gained us nothing and cost us immensely. Don Young has been in Congress for four decades and is a part of the Republican alliance that forced the shutdown. The responsibility lies as clearly on his shoulders as any other. He now says workers who were declared non-essential during this fiasco should be under greater scrutiny for continued employment in the future.

Lets judge Young by his own words and values: If they werent essential, they arent needed. Well, Don you cannot have it both ways. Either you supported the shutdown from the outset, or you failed to lead your party in Congress. In either case, thats classic definition of non-essential.

Don, you have been in Washington too long. Over 40 years you are what you vilify&a federal employee. You have forgotten the people who put you there those whom you are sworn to represent. You truly believe that the rules do not apply to you, and you are above the law. It is time for a Representative who will support Alaskan workers and their families. Our Representative must fight to keep Alaskas economy strong and growing and put that before any partisan politics. We must restore accountability, vitality and common sense to Congress and the only way we can do that is by electing a new Representative to the House.

Matt Moore owns a small business in Anchorage and is a democratic candidate running for U.S. House in 2014.

ANCHORAGE: Today The Hill reported that the House of Representatives' gym remains open despite the government shutdown, although now Don Young has to wash his own towel.

"While 25% of Alaskans are suffering an economic hardship because of the GOP shutdown, Don Young's Congressional gym remains open. I doubt Alaskans have any sympathy that now he has to wash his own towel like the rest of us," said Matt Moore, Democratic candidate for Congress.

Yesterday KTUU reported that one in four Alaskans is suffering an economic hardship because of the GOP shutdown. KTVA reported that veterans are being denied claims because Veterans Administration employees are furloughed. APRN reported that unemployment is rising because of the shutdown.
The Treasury Department has said that a default on US credit--the next hostage crisis contemplated by the Tea Party--would have devastating economic consequences.

ANCHORAGE: Today, Alaskas senators announced that they will either donate their pay to charity or suspend their pay while the Federal government is shutdown. Congressman Young plans to continue collecting his pay.

Once again Don Young thinks he is better than his constituents. The majority of Alaskas Congressional delegation sympathizes with Alaskans who are also federal employees, but not Don Young," said Democratic Congressional candidate Matt Moore.

Don Young believes all federal employees should be paid (just like him), and he has signed onto legislation that would ensure that all furloughed federal employees would receive retroactive pay. Candidate Moore states, His logic is simple, Don Young gets paid first and then furloughed federal workers can eventually receive their back pay and no harm is done. Don Young does not understand that many Alaskans do not have sufficient savings to pay bills for an extended period of time without a paycheck.

Over the weekend, 5 families experienced the loss of a family member serving in Afghanistan. With the Federal Government shutdown in effect, those families wont be receiving a death benefit check to help pay for funeral costs. Normally, a death gratuity payment is wired to family members within 36 hours of a soldiers death. A continuing Federal shutdown means that those families are more isolated in their hour of need and receive no financial support when they need it the most.

Moore states, Alaskans deserve a representative who can change with the times, put the needs of others before their own, and follow their moral compass. I ask Don Young to do the right thing and vote for a clean Continuing Resolution. It wont cost him a dime.
